Character Typing

Shatter Me Series MBTI

Hiyo. These are just my notes on some typings for characters from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi, as Restore Me is coming out soon and it got me thinking about the characters again. Looking over this, I’m surprised there are so many Ni users (no matter the position) in the main squad. Usually no one gets high Ni-users well enough to do more than one of them justice as characters, so I’m really glad Mafi does what she does.

Juliette – INFJ or INFP. It was a hard choice between INFJ and INFP despite these types being completely different in terms of functions because of how unstable Juliette came across and tbh I didn’t read the first book that carefully. If you asked me another day, I might flip-flop to the other one. I say INFP because she refuses to compromise her values when she refuses extravagent meals among other luxuries she’s offered in the first book. BUT I would also say INFJ because of how she’s mentioned how her parents had rejected her, she’s very concerned about how people feel and how they feel about her.

idk sometimes characters/people exist in ways that transcend mbti, alright? I think I’ll revisit this typing when I read Restore Me because I haven’t reread the original trilogy to prepare.

Warner – Most definitely INTJ or ENTJ. My first reaction was to say INTJ until I read Destroy Me, so more likely ENTJ after some thought. Best boy contender disguised as a villain. He initially (by this I mean the first scene) came across as a crazed ENTP, but that was an act. He copes with a lot of his stressors by controlling his immediate environment e.g. always wanting clean clothes, flossing thrice a day, wanting warm socks, which suggests lower Se. In the Destroy Me novella, he tells the liuetnant (his grandpa) to stick to his opinion on coffee even though Warner himself wasn’t a fan of it because he dislikes the idea of using beans (stimulants in this case?) to get through the day. This suggests Te/Fi over Ti/Fe.

Kenji – ESTP, side note: he’s got mcfreakin’ hillarious dialogue. I highly encourage people to keep going in this series for the brilliance that is Kenji alone. He’s got a bombastic way of expressing himself verbally.

Adam – he might have a personality idk (Sorry). jk, I think he’s ISFJ perhaps.

book review: A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge

A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge 5/5 stars 🎉| Goodreads Review

I’m back from the UK! I went to Edinburgh for vacation and headed down to London for my graduation ceremony ;;; I’m still recovering from jet-lag but my jetlag from China seems to have reset, so now I only have a 6 hour difference to get over. Anyway! I bought A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge from the airport bookshop on a whim because it was shiny and it was about ghosts and I did not regret it at all. It seems to be a reoccuring theme that I invest heavily in historical or historical-based fantasy books all while history was my worst subject, but I can’t help it, it’s my niche.

Six of Crows MBTI

Hi… so I finished SOC and CK and though they made me suffer as a reader, I do have typings for the squad. These are preliminary typings and I will definitely not be going back to revisit for the sake of accuracy. These are just the impressions I got from mostly reading and a bit of skimming to get through the duology. I’ll mostly just dispute that Kaz is ENTJ not INTJ because honestly I didn’t care about the characters all too much in this series. I’m all about correcting NTJ stereotypes tho.

Spoilers for Crooked Kingdom below because I can’t bare to go back and remember SOC.

Kaz – ENTJ

  • I disagree with everyone who automatically types this boy as INTJ because coughs brooding bad boy INTJ stereotype is so old… I’m done with it. And being an INTJ myself, I would say about Kaz the same thing I’ve said about Jumin Han – his primary goal is to get shit done which reeks of dominant Te. Kaz tends to act first and get stuff done then ask questions later. He’s choosing specific actions (Te) to get what he wants (what auxillary Ni envisions) rather than the other way around as an INTJ would.
    • Kaz has a good quote (yes, I admit there are a couple of CK lines I actually liked that shows his dom Te) When he and Wylan break into van Eck’s place they have the convo: “You’re not weak because you can’t read. You’re weak because you’re afraid of people seeing your weakness. You’re letting shame decide who you are. Help me with the painting.”
  • Kaz’s primary struggle in this series is showing mercy on those who wronged him or something (again I didn’t read too carefully because of my hatred distaste for the writing but I’m sure it’s somewhere in his arc). Wylan and Inej serve as foils or morality guides with their dominant Fi to Kaz’s dom Te. Their interactions urge him to embrace his Fi.
    • When Jesper asks who’s Jordie, Kaz mcfreakin’ snaps and it’s really obvious to everyone, showing that he’s got a short emotional fuse – which is understandable since feeling is his lowest function. INTJs would be better at hiding their emotional outbursts in my opinion.
  • Not to be all shippy with the mbti typings because people of any type can get along fairly well, but this would make sense why his interactions with Inej and Wylan are like the strongest if we go by the ExTJ x IxFP dynamic being a nice pair off. Again, this is just my opinion.

Inej – ISFP

Jesper – ESTP

Matthias – ISTJ

  • Honestly the ESTP-ISTJ dynamic Jesper and Matthias had going on was really (A-OK SIGN). Given their almost Zuko-Katara backstories – Matthias, whom I begrudgingly will admit LB did incorporate some Zuko into his character, and Jesper basically having Katara’s tragic backstory – I kinda ship it. Jetthias it is and Jetthias so it shall be.

Nina – ENTP

Wylan – INFP

Kuwei – idk Wylan was Kuwei longer than Kuwei was Kuwei.

Yuri!!! on Ice: Viktor Nikiforov (ENFJ)

*SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES and possibly word of God aka Kubo-sensei’s interviews/tweets/etc.*

This is by no means an extensive post on every instance I’ve found evidence that Vik is ENFJ, but these are the things that stood out to me when I was trying to type him. I did originally peg him as an ESFJ, but this man does not have Si lol.

Also Vik is definitely not ENFP (I dedicate this statement to my friend Yao, who would be happy to see me tell y’all once and for all) and I will show you why…

Fe – Vik asks Yuuri what role he wants Viktor to be in their relationship. He’s picks up on Yuuri’s feelings easily (though, he’s not always accurate) and, as Yuuri said, meets him half way. Viktor’s go-to action was to try to adapt his role/persona to Yuuri’s needs (Fe) vs. Yuuri’s request for him to just be himself (Fi).

He urges Yuuri to be nicer to his fans  and expresses disappointment when Yuuri is all into his own internal issues (Yuuri has Fi btw, which is a good contrast here).

Also, see the season 1 finale where he hides his true feelings for Yuuri’s sake at the Kiss n Cry when he says he’s coming back to skating. We obviously know he’s shook because he doesn’t want Yuuri to retire, but he doesn’t say anything to tip Yuuri off because of Yuuri’s excitement/happiness that Vik is coming back to skating.

He rarely loses his temper, and even when he does he doesn’t lash out. Vik is also pretty expressive facially – which isn’t giving much insight on his Fe itself. Usually Fe users tend to be more expressive with their faces and Fi users show emotion more with their eyes. That’s just a fun thing I noted. (insert HEART MOUTH SMILE).

Ni – Even though Vik was lacking two the L words (love and life) for years during his skating career, he can still get the “feel” of what he needs to present to the audience in order to perform his routines. He also has a hard time describing in words what “agape” means to him – he imagines it in a more abstract way than concrete, so it’s more of an idea than something tangible.

Se – Viktor has impulsive spending habits (like me!). He’s got an eye for things that are aesthetically pleasing. He also suggests to burn the tie Yuuri wears on television. In addition, when Yuuri is trying to find his eros and says that katsudon will be his source of eros, Viktor goes out to drink and arrives back in the morning with a hang over. Viktor also picks up on Yuuri’s non-verbal behavior in the (PROPOSAL) episode and also that Yuuri was his fan from the way Yuuri skates.

Ti – Vik can be pretty critical – he’s quick to point out what isn’t working and we do hear his internal logic in the narration that gives us some insight to his thought process.

Yuri!!! on Ice: Yuuri Katsuki (ISFP)

I think it’s sort of the consensus that Yuuri is ISFP, but for the sake of completion (Vikturi pair) here we go. *Spoilers for the entire series*

Fi – Yuuri needs time alone to process his emotions. He also thinks about his feelings in terms of himself. He may not be aware of how he comes across to others e.g. Minami while he’s stewing over his internal dilemma. He has a more subdued way of expressing his feelings vs. Vik who is outright affectionate (dat Fe).

Se – From Viktor’s POV in the proposal episode, he observes the way that Yuuri was always looking for the right something, indicating that Yuuri is comfortable with sampling his external environment in the moment.

It’s noted several times in the series that Yuuri is in his element when he moves with the music during a performance. He’s willing to take risks like changing the jumps in his program on the fly.

Yuuri also has a tendency to stress eat from pressure before competitions.

Ni -Yuuri struggles to grasp a concept for Eros and needs to use katsudon to help him focus.

Yuuri thinks quite a bit about his future regarding his retirement from skating. Yuuri also sees the implication of his bad performance on Vik’s reputation. He thinks a lot about how he can’t keep Viktor away from the skating world and about the skating world without Vik.

Te – Yuuri makes some callous remarks in his internal monologue at the Nationals after he and Vik have that moment in the parking garage because LOL Vik’s methods didn’t exactly work. So his grip Te activates and does what’s effective in his moment of Te grip clarity?? We see this again in the finale internal monologue when Yuuri skates Yuri on Ice when he talks about Yurio being an idiot for using up his stamina or smth.

Yuuri wants to add more quads to his routine to match JJ’s difficulty score – basically to get the job done and get dat marriage medal. Unfortunately, this plan backfires because he focuses too much on the technique rather than playing his stregnths and he’s unable to skate his best Eros in the penultimate episode.

A rather amusing example of his Te is where he tells Vik to take him sightseeing (more overplayed in the Eng dub, but I thought it was cute) because nah he got a plan to relax with his bae in Barcelona.
