Descendant of the Crane was one of my most-anticipated reads for 2019! To my surprise, I was lucky enough to receive a digital ARC of this book form Netgalley, so thank you to the publisher for providing me the chance to read this early! Also thanks to Joan He for providing an updated copy on top of that 😀

Notes:

1) I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Changes might be made in the final, published version.

2) This is a non-spoilery review.

3) Banner art by Feifei Ruan

Now, let’s get down to business!

So the story goes: people thought there were gay pirates but then found out there weren’t but then *I* read it and there were gay pirates, so now I’m confused because that isn’t the main problem I had with this book.

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

Two words: Demon furries.

Natasha really knew how to target me here with the furry content and loads and loads and loads of Asian food porn and cultural references. Unfortunately I didn’t *love* this book but I do like it enough to continue the series. This is like the world of Kung Fu Panda anthropomorphic animals but demons plus humans meets a highly non-consensual version of the Selection situation. I’m trash for both KFP and the Selection, so I’m all buckled up for the ride anyway.

This is like Fairy AU Hana Yori Dango fanfic, y’all. I mean it’s hella entertaining, but I got some problems. And it’s probably not what you think they are.

I didn’t deserve this – Dance of Thieves Review

Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

★★★☆☆ // 3 out of 5 stars

Goodreads Review: here

I didn’t deserve this. The Remnant Chronicles didn’t deserve this.

So, if you are  fan of the Remnant Chronicles, you were likely ecstatic to see Mary E. Pearson announce a continuation to her series. Unfortunately, Dance of Thieves fell short of the standard set by its predecessors. There’s a reason why Lia and Rafe just walk out of the room in this one and that is one Big Mood.

Beware: Unmarked spoilers for the ending down below.

book review: A Thousand Beginnings and Endings

3.5 stars

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings is an anthology of East and South Asian fairytale retellings and reimaginings written by a group of YA authors. I was lucky enough to find that my library system had this, so I did the proper book-hoarding thing and requested it. I’m going to review each story one-by-one

book review: Jade City by Fonda Lee

3.5 stars | Goodreads review

Let me preface this by saying, I just don’t really like mafia/gang plot lines, hence why I rated this lower than books IMO that are not as quality as Jade City. I think this is a 4 to 4.25 star book quality-wise, but in terms of enjoyment, it took me a long time to figure out whether I liked it overall. And the verdict is – I do like this quite a bit.
